Overview

Building on the core physician advisor education provided in the earlier Learning Center courses (TLC A and TLC B), this six-module course, TLC C, offers a detailed look at topics both new and seasoned physician advisors need to understand to provide effective support to their hospital systems. Modules detailing the use of Observation services since the introduction of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Two-Midnight Rule, an overview of denials and appeals, National Coverage Determinations (NCDs) and Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs), and a thorough overview of the role of the utilization management committee build upon core physician advisor skills. A module reviewing the nuances of encephalopathy and acute respiratory failure documentation will strengthen your Clinical Documentation Integrity skill set. Finally, a module on integrating innovation into the physician advisor role offers a look into future technologies which will significantly impact the scope of the position in the near future, completing the collection.

Objectives

Upon completion of the this program, physician advisors will be more knowledgeable in the specific criteria governing the Two-Midnight rule; better understand documentation for the higher-risk audit diagnoses of encephalopathy and acute respiratory failure; have a strong overview of the structure of both the utilization management committee and the concept of NCDs and LCDs; be able to begin managing denials and appeals; and begin to appreciate the role Artificial Intelligence (AI) will play in the physician advisor world in the coming years.
